Differences Between
Laminated Safety Glass &Toughened Glass
Toughened Safety Glass
Toughened safety glass is a singular piece of glass that has been cut and the edges treated then put thru a furnace, this process makes it approximately 3 times stronger than standard glass.
- Toughened safety glass comes in a range of thicknesses - 4 mm 5 mm, 6 mm, 8 mm 10 mm, 12 mm, 15 mm & 19 mm.
Strength and Breakage
Toughened glass is physically stronger and harder to break, but when it does break, it shatters into small pieces. While toughened glass leaves the area exposed, and crumbles to the floor.
Laminated Safety Glass
Laminated safety glass is 2 pieces of glass that is laminated with a clear interlayer film giving it the strength, this process makes it approximately 1.5 times stronger than standard glass. This process makes it safer when broken, and when used right has security, thermal and noise reducing capabilities
- Laminated Safety Glass comes in a range of thicknesses - 5.38 mm, 6.38 mm, 8.38 mm, 10.38 mm, 12.38 mm.
- There are numerous thicknesses but these are the more common.
Laminated Safety
Laminated glass stays intact when broken, similar to people driving a car with a cracked windscreen.
- Laminated glass does not shatter or splinter when broken.
Standard Glass is Called Float Glass
It breaks more easily than the safety glass.
Float Glass comes in a range of thicknesses - 2 mm, 3 mm,4 mm 5 mm, 6 mm, 8 mm, 10 mm, 12 mm, 15 mm, 19 mm.
